Our latest volunteer of the month is also a student in our paramedic academy working toward a second career. Don Lederer has been a volunteer EMT with CCEMS since August 13, 2018 and has donated 147 hours of his time to our community. The Volunteer of the Month Award was presented by CCEMS Board President Greg Marwill at the February meeting of the Board of Directors.
He ended up at Cypress Creek EMS because he was bored. After retiring as a Chemist from Huntsman Corporation he wanted something to do and he wanted to make a difference. Don had been a volunteer EMT in the 80s and 90s in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Ohio.
He decided he wanted to do that again. So, he took the EMT class that CCEMS coordinates for area fire departments and then applied to the CCEMS Paramedic Academy. He was accepted into the current class which graduates in October.
Don says he chose CCEMS because of its reputation for excellence but also because of our reputation for welcoming volunteers. He works mostly at Medic 53 with Rick Morales and Danielle Thomas.
Don, who is also a volunteer in the ER at Memorial Hermann in the Woodlands, plans to go to work full time as a paramedic after graduation. He would like to work at CCEMS and become an In Charge Paramedic.
Don and his wife Betty have two grown children; a son in Seattle, and a Daughter in Boston.
