IPMBA Bike Instructor Class Nov. 16-21

It was the first Regional IPMBA Bike Instructor class ever hosted at Cypress Creek EMS AND it was the largest such class ever. A total of 36 police officers and medics  from all over the country took the rigorous course at Cypress Creek EMS to advance to the level of Instructor.  The class was a huge success.  Thanks to the participants and a special thank you to the Instructor Trainers:

Tom Harris (CCEMS)

Rance Okada (Retired, Westminster (CO) Police Department )

Jeff Taylor (CCEMS)

Tom Woods (Retired, Denton Police Department)

This week the following three worked to qualify as Instructor Trainers:

Steve Bazany (San Antonio Police)

Bobby Sellers (CCEMS)

Brian Gillman (CCEMS)

Of all the instructors, the best known and the one with the most experience is Tom Woods. Lt. Woods retired from the Denton Police Department a couple of years ago, but is still an IPMBA member. In fact, he was a founding member of the organization and his IPMBA instructor number is 10. It took some doing to convince Tom to come out of retirement and help teach the class at Cypress Creek EMS. Around here, Tom Woods is referred to as “Tom the Elder” and Tom Harris is “Tom the Younger.” At first, the answer from the Elder to the Younger was NO. BUT, the Younger managed to seal the deal by promising the Elder some authentic Cajun Boudin.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Cypress Creek’s history with the International Police Mountain Bike Association goes back to the late 1990s, when the CCEMS Bicycle Medic Team adopted IPMBA standards.
